Until recently Non-EU citizens required an officially registered “car keeper” to be able to register a car to their name in Hungary.
As a result, although third country nationals were able to purchase a car, this rule had made it quite complex and burdensome for them to register the purchased car to their name.
Third country freshly arriving to Hungary had to find a suitable person (according to the law), who in addition, would be willing to commit as the official car keeper. But how to find such person when you just arrived, do not know anyone or do not want to impose on a third party the legal responsibilities associated with being the official keeper of your car?
Since the 1st of February 2016, third country nationals will not have to worry about this any longer. Due to a change in the regulation, third country nationals can now buy and register a car to their name in Hungary without requiring a official car keeper.
