Christmas is one of the best times of the year. But the Advent season is even better if you are in Budapest. The smell of mulled wine and burning wood fills out the streets. Flash-mobs can happen anywhere in a minute and the magic is everywhere.
Here is our top 10 things to do during Christmas time in Budapest.
The Christmas shop in Váci street.
This shop is a must for every Christmas lover. The shop can be hard to find because it has a small window with an even smaller door next to it. The prices are not the lowest, but you definitely can go in and enjoy a few minutes of holiday feeling. It is worth it!

Mulled wine in the Castle
You would like to have a walk in the beautiful Castle District, but it is too cold outside? Do not worry, just grab a pair of gloves and buy a cup of mulled wine.
Walking in a beautiful place with a good hot drink, what’s not to like?
For your own homemade Hungarian mulled wine – “forralt bor”:
- red wine or white wine,
- cinnamon (fahéj),
- clove (szegfûszeg)
- whole grains of pepper (bors),
- slices of orange peel and lemon peel or juice.
Mix all the ingredients together.
Adjust the recipe to your own taste.
Heat up slowly the wine with the ingredients – do not boil!
Pour in a mug and enjoy!
Andrássy street and the Hungarian specialty: Chimney Cake
Start walking from Deák square towards Andrassy street. On the corner, you will find our favorite place. It is always busy, but believe me it is worth the wait as they have the best chimney cake in the whole city.
Buy one (or a few) and take a stroll down the Christmas lighted streets while enjoying this hot cinnamony treat.
